TRASHed Coachella 2012 :: Call To Artists
Inspire Thousands Of Festival Goers And Win A Pass To the Weekend Of Your Choice.
Coachella Music & Arts Festival and Global Inheritance are confirming artists to participate in the TRASHed exhibit taking place this April in Indio, California.
Founded in 2004, the TRASHed :: Art of Recycling program is an interactive art walk on the Coachella grounds that encourages festival goers to recycle using redesigned recycling bins designed by artists from around the world.
50 artists will be selected to design a 65 gallon recycling bin for the festival in 2012. These recycling bins will be on display during both Coachella weekends and then donated to a local school in the Coachella Valley.
A TRASHed Coachella art exhibit will take place in Los Angeles before all the redesigned recycling bins are shipped to the festival grounds.
All artists will receive a festival pass for the weekend of their choice plus the opportunity to have their artwork displayed and promoted on the Coachella and Global Inheritance websites.
Interested artists must submit samples of their work before January 31st to:

Hi Jackie, all the winner artists will get one ticket. The winner will be notified as soon as possible but we cannot guarantee it will be before tickets go on sale.
So for example, if i collaborate with another person on making a trash can then we both only get one pass?

Hi Samantha, the office was close for the holidays. If your email was over 2 mb was deleted because we don’t accept over that size. we will contacting artists by the end of the month.

what happens if we already have tickets and we win the competition?
Hi Tony, each selected artist will receive a ticket. If you are selected and you already have a ticket, it’s up to you what you do.
Does the sample of our work need to be a sample of what we are doing on the trash can or part of it done, or can it be samples of other work we have done that reflect what we will do on the can?
Hi Tara, Preferably it will about your idea for the recycling bin. You can also add previous work to support your design/style.

Would you happen to know the type of paint that is recommended for these bins? As I understand, many paints don’t adhere to plastic. I’ve read that spray paint works for plastic, but my design would work better with “regular” paint and brush technique. Anyone have any insight on this?
You’ll have to cover the trash can with primer before painting it. You can find it at a place like Home Depot

Hey maggie, I was wondering if id be able to send sketch, and a completed “idea” of what it would look like painted? My painted work is much more presentable than my “sketches”

The participants also had a paint a mini bin last year. Is that required for this year as well?

once our submission is chosen for us to become an official participant, how long do we have to paint the trash cans themselves before turning them in completed for the art shows?

Winners have to pick up their recycling bin from downtown los angeles. Directions are provided in the confirmation letter if their bin is selected. Once the bin is finished, the artist will be dropping off the last week of March in a TBA exhibit space.
But it’s open worldwide so you can’t expect everybody to be there, right?. I read that the artists are responsible for the ‘shipment’ of their bin. So you can mail them in? Sorry, just a little confused…
Yes Alice, it’s open worldwide, you could mail them but they are responsible for shipping costs.
So… if we are selected and we live in, say, Canada… we get shipped a trash can, and then we paint it and ship it back? And we pay for shipping for both trips?
If you are selected and you live in Canada, you would need to find a bin (approved by us, in order to have consistency in the collection), paint it and then send it to us. That’s how we worked with an artist in the past.

Yes Mark, you can send multiple files. The TOTAL size of the message should be under 2mb.

That’s fine on nudity but needs to high a special bin. Nudity on average art wont get you in.

If we submitted an entry that was a little over 2mb (like 2.8) will our entry be disqualified? I just realized mine was a little over. (I didn’t know the total message had to be under 2mb, I thought it was each attachment!)

For the winners, does the design on the can have to be very specifically similar or exact to the submission, or can it just be something in the same vein, so to speak? Just asking because it would suck to feel restrained to make a facsimile or exact, enlarged copy of it based on the submission.

I guess it depends on the artist’s style. I doesn’t need to be exact copy but it does need to be the same design. You cannot submit something and the do something different.

Hi Vicky, Artists are responsible for materials and paints. Recycling bins are donated to schools afterwards. Maybe this can be written off in your taxes.
I understand that each message can only be 2mb, and we can include more than one design. But can we submit more than once; for example, two emails with 2mb each?
Hi Elise, If your message is too large, I would recommend that you compress it or shrink it. The images don’t need to be hi-res and, in terms of organization, It would be better to have all of your work in one email.
If I do a can and it is selected but I cannot attend, could I give my ticket to someone?
No Tyler, the prize is not transferable.
How does that work? The ticket will have our name on it or something? Because I want to enter but I’m not 100% certain I can attend, but if I can’t I wouldn’t be able to sell/give it away? How come?
Hi Alice, you would be on the Coachella guest list for the weekend of your choice. You cannot resell or transfer the ticket.

Ok so if you are chosen as one of the artists, and are from another state, are you responsible for shipping the bin? that could be extremely expensive!
That is right Jared, we cannot reimburse for the bin or shipping but you still can take part on the program if you want to. It’s up to you.

I am just about to send off my entries. I want to attach Flickr links so I don’t go over the attachment limit. But you said that the email couldn’t be any larger than 2 mb. Does that only apply to people who send in attachments? Because I can’t figure out how to find out the size of my email. Could anybody explain? Again, the size limit was probably only for emails with attachments but I want to be sure. Thanks!
Hi Alice, Trevor is right. If you send us flickr links you won’t have to worry about size.
URL Links are not attachments anyways it would take about 2 high quality jpegs to go over 2mb most imgs you see on the internet range from 56k to 200k. If your not attaching any files don’t worry.

Found out about this late in the game, hope its not too late, planning on submitting right before the deadline so i have as much time as possible to finish, just had a quick question; If I submit multiple designs, and am selected, will you guys choose your favorite amongst them and let me know which of them was picked? hoping a few different style will give me better odds, really want to make this happen.
